There is a lot of us that were on at the time you were, ol pal. It's just that some don't check in often enough and the forum suffers accordingly ( How's life been treating you?
Speaking of cockroaches, I can't believe the aforementioned replies saying there wasn't any on the Cochrane. You just weren't looking is all I can say about that. Now, I was a "twinkie" in the air-conditioned electronics spaces (which definately had it's advantages) and we had roaches in them rooms, too. Funny thing is they weren't very black, actually they were almost a light tan color. And they didn't get very big, either.

Hey there, Brad, good to hear from someone that was on ole #21 during my era. I see that your in Santa Barbra, Ca., I lived in Ventura 1958-62 and Roughnecked in the oilfields around the area. And yes there were many Cockroaches on #21 in all the spaces, since I had "A" Gang I had equipment from bow to stern. You came on there just before I left in May 1975, I got held about 4 months past my transfer to shore duty due to escorting the refugee ships (that's another story) from Vietnam. I only work in Santa Barbara (can't afford to live there). I live in Camarillo (just slightly more affordable). I arrived after A school to #21 early Feb 1974. The ship was graduating from a turn in the yards. I remember you, pal and yes the Spring of 75 was interesting. That was such a great crew. Every so often, I pull out the old cruise book and smile. Actually, they have it posted here on the website.
I see you are retired now. I think I'm jealous, but I still have small ones between 10-15 yrs old at home, so I couldn't afford to be retired anyway.

While serving my tour cranking (about the same time as Bos I believe), my buddy Frank Ambio and I were cleaning cleaning the floor or something (I really don't remember). I found that pitchers of nice hot water from the dispenser would do the trick. I filled one of the aluminum pitchers up to the brim with scalding hot water and was about to go about my job of cleaning. It was then that I noticed that one of my boondocker's was untied. Being the safety minded young 18yr old that I was (ha ha) I decided to set the pitcher next to the coffee maker while I bent down to tie my laces. That was a huge mistake, because it was at that exact moment the ship took a nice little roll to starboard [xx(]. I'm sure you can imagine the look of suprise when that pitcher landed on my back. All I remember was the complete look of shock on Franks face and sheer pain. Next thing I know, I'm down in A/S berthing's head, spraying cold water on my back. That little mistake earned me 1st and 2nd degree burns on most of my back and a little fame in the Navy wide Lessons Learned message[!]. In fact Doc Simpkins said it was a good thing I went to the shower, because the damage would have been a lot worse. It took a little while for me to live that one down.

Hi There Jerry! Good to hear from another from my era on "The Pearl Of The Pacific" 'Tis a shame ya didn't hear of the first and only Reunion, down in Brownsville. It was a blast, and good to see the old girl off. Sadly I was the only one there from the whole 70's era. As we aproach geezerhood, 'tis good to hear others are still alive and kickin'! Looking forward to hearing more from ya! Brad Z, didja ever find out how Crash Boynton's cruise book wound up on E-Bay? Fred Dick- I still have that incredible ASROC pic you took- still framed on the wall- one of the few Cochrane things I have left after a house fire a number of years ago. Have ya checked out the posting of "What the G in DDG stands for" yet? There is a Tartar pic there that is as outstanding as your Asroc pic. Anyway, darn good to see postings from you too! Any of yall remember when we left that month of smooth as glass spent in the Indian Ocean, followed immediatly by the raging storm in the Singapore Straights? [] [] (...know I for 1 sure as hell do!)
