I believe this happened on our way back to Pearl after a cruise, the Deck Force & everyone else had just finished painting out the ship & a messy accident occured when shifting oil tanks & a slough of oil came out of the vent tubes & sprayed the back half of the ship with fuel oil... what a clean-up that was but the "OLD GIRL" looked brand new after a second coat of paint...

See my post of 2/11, this same forum. I do remember that the clean-up went on all night and into the next day. I think that we were delayed in returning to port. I don't remember which year it happened, but think it was 68.

I wasn't on in 68, but can't imagine how McCoy would respond to this happening if it was when he was aboard. He liked to mess with people, but kept the ship very squared away, didn't he?

BM1 McCoy really did a great job of keeping the ship & crew in top shape & I am very proud to have been a member of the crew. If you made him mad or got on his bad side, there's where you stayed, but I remember having a few San Miguels w/him in Olonga...po

I remember laying too off Diamond Head for a day while McCoy and Lucas tried to kill all the snipes they saw. The deck crew was over the side painting and cleaning (maybe even at nite) so we could be pretty when we went in.

I always got along with McCoy, but like you said, never wanted to get him mad at me. He really did take pride in Cochrane, and it showed everytime we entered port anywhere. I think that we are all still proud of her.
