****************************************************************
CAUTION, PLEASE SEE THIS INFO IF YOU ARE A REGULAR NAVY FROM
SAY 1965 THRU LATE 1969.
****************************************************************
VFW and VA have both helped me with DD-214's, and other paperwork...but have had one hell of a time over the years,
supporting Security Clearances and other V.A. issues. If you
were regular Navy in the early build-up when it seemed like
everyone was going to Viet Nam under the GREAT Society, and if you
got a "B" in front of a number and it is not your Social Security
number, you are one of the unlucky. This practice I have been told over the years was due to Congress not Declaring WAR, and the Johnson
Administration calling Viet Nam a Police Action. In any event,
these damn numbers stayed the same until about 1970's Something, and
then everyone was put on their Social Security number. MANY, MANY
MISTAKES HAVE BEEN MADE, and I can tell you as late as two months
ago, I could not get my G.I. Bill restored for a house we will
buy in Nevada shortly, as they could not find me under my S/S number.
On this last run at em for paperwork, We finally went to Max Clelland
here in Ga-Ga for assistance....give yourself lots of time as when you deal with the V.A. or Gov, its like dealing with a grade-school
drop-out baggage checker at the airport. I have found the dates not
so important as having both the "B" number and Social Security number.
BLESS ALL WHO HAVE THIS ISSUE AND HAVE TO DO A SECURITY CLEARANCE
PROCESS.........tom/QM2 66-69
