While we were in Dry Dock the crew was moved to a WWI barracks near the tennis courts by Bravo Piers. The place was a fire trap, wood, single wall construction, open bay on the top floor and most of the bottom floor. On top of that all of the firefighting equipment was removed and the risers capped. Even the fire extinguishers were empty. One Sunday evening about 2200 a fire started in the stair well where some old mattresses were stored, rumor had it that it was caused by a cigarette. I remember leaving my room and going to put my laundry in my car for the next morning to present to Slim from ABO Laundry and someone yelling about the fire. I ran to the Wave barracks about a block away to call but the telephones were out on the base so I drove to the Fire Station near the Marine club and found all of the trucks were on Sub Base fighting a fire at the liquor store. When I got back I found Honolulu fire trucks on scene but it was the Cochrane sailors who were taking some of the hoses and fighting the fire.
A few days later the powers to be allowed us back in but each person had to be escorted by a MAA to ensure no looting of others property. I remember helping Les Bandy open his locker, in it we found the remains of his golf equipment and his bowling ball with his shoes fused to it.
