does anyone remember him? i just rcvd an email from his sister. she says he was on ddg-21 and was injured in 1983 and put in a coma for 6 yrs. i don't remember him or anyone getting that badly injured onboard.

I seem to remember the ship was having a lot of divisional parties in summer of 1983 prior to our departing Pearl for Yokuska.
If I remember correctly BM3 Mercier fell from a Lanai from about the 12th story (not sure how high) of a hotel where a division party was going on in Waikiki. If this is the guy I remember, his parents flew in from Canada and only spoke French. There was a mad dash to find someone fluent in French Aboard the ship to escort them. It sticks in my mind because I spoke a little french (my mom is french) but not enough do really do any good.
He was in a Coma from the time of the accident to when we left for Yoko (sep 83) and I never heard anymore about him after we changed homeports.
I had totally forgotten about him until I saw your post. He was in First Division and I was in F&G.

Don't know how Kelly Metz's response ended up under my name, I'm trying to figure out how to reply. I was the HM2 onboard at the time. L.E. Wilson is correct. He fell suffering massive injuries. We left for Japan not too long after and never heard anything else on his condition.
